One of the toughest tournaments of the year in the women’s circuit is the Russian Superfinal. This year both Valentina Gunina and Alexandra Kosteniuk showed performances well above 2600 to grab Gold and Silver medals, with respectively 7 and 6.5 out of 9 games. Bronze medal was obtained by Natalia Pogonina with 5.5, then Kovalevskaya, Kovanova and Goryachkina 4.5 and T. Kosintseva and Bodnaruk 3.5/9. Below you will find many photos of the event. Alexandra beat T. Kosintseva and Pogonina in their direct encounters, and drew Gunina, but most important, she created a masterpiece in her game against Charochkina, presented at the bottom of this post.

The 2012 Flims National Swiss Championship just ended today, with the final victory of GM Joe Gallagher with 6.5/9, followed by GM Pelletier and me GM Kosteniuk with 6/9. See the full results and photos below. I am pretty happy with my “+3” result, with 4 wins and only 1 loss, which will make me win approximately 12 ELO points and bring me to about 2490 ELO (I’m working to get back to my record of 2540). I had some good games against Zueger and Gerber, and Chess King has already posted my game against Korchnoi at this link.
Final results:
1. GM Joe Gallagher (Neuenburg) 6½. 2. GM Yannick Pelletier (Fr/Sz) 6 (24,25). 3. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (Rus/Sz) 6 (24). 4. IM Oliver Kurmann (Luzern) 5½. 5. IM Julien Carron (Bramois) 4½. 6. IM Markus Klauser (Belp) 4 (16,50). 7. IM Richard Gerber (Genf) 4 (14,25). 8. IM Beat Züger (Siebnen) 3½. 9. IM Alex Domont (Nyon) 3. 10. GM Viktor Kortschnoi (Wohlen/AG) 2.

Today we’d like to present a couple photos taken both in Kazan (Tatarstan, Russia) in 2004 and in 2012. They show the Russian chess champions Alexandra Kosteniuk and the sisters Nadezhda and Tatiana Kosintseva. The first photo was taken in 2004 during the Russian Superfinal (news). The last one was taken last week during the 2012 Grand Prix (news). In between these 8 years, all three ladies have won countless titles and awards, all three won at least once the Russian championship, and they are now all full GM’s. Both Alexandra and Tatiana have been European champions, and Alexandra has been the 12th women’s world chess champion 2008-2010. Together all three girls have won many team competitions (2010 Olympiads, 2007-2009-2011 European Team Championships). A great combination of competition and friendship! Best wishes to all of them for the continuation of their careers!

Today I’d like to share with you a detailed analysis of my game from the recent Russian Team Chess Championships from Loo-Sochi against Baira Kovanova. It’s a very interesting Ruy Lopez opening and shows a nice battle of a good Knight against a bad Bishop. To publish my game on my blog I entered the game into Chess King and used the easy Export-to-Blog button.

Hello everyone!
I found some nice chess stamps from the Republic of Burundi on eBay and thought I’d share them with you. I am honored to have next to me on the stamps Morphy and Lasker. It’s cool to see myself featured on a stamp. Actually over the years I have collected lots of stamps with me on them, it would be nice if one day I got a letter with one of those stamps or if I could use those stamps for my letters! 🙂
Below you can see the stamps bigger.

Hello everyone!
I just came back from the 2011 Swiss National Chess Championship in Leukerbad, Switzerland. It was won by GM Bauer with 7.5/9, followed by GM Sokolov 7 points. The best Swiss were the amazing Viktor Korchnoi (men) with 6.5 and Alexandra Kosteniuk (women) with 5.5. While I am not happy with my result (I started quite well with 4/4, but had a horrible end of tournament), I nevertheless had a great time in Switzerland (especially spending time with Viktor and his wife Petra) and played some nice games at the beginning of the tournament. I will soon post a nice game I won against Kurmann in that event.
More photos, statistics, to come soon! Tomorrow I’m off to Biel to play the Chess960 and Rapid events!
